UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has decided to block Julian Assange’s extradition to the US. With this move, she has averted a dark precedent from being set for activists, journalists and civil society everywhere.
Assange would face up to 175 years behind bars in the US. He has already spent three unconscionable years in Belmarsh prison in London, a period in which his health has deteriorated considerably. The absurdity of this punishment shows how the US government is bent on deterring others from revealing their crimes, as Julian courageously did.
We now call on the UK government to release Assange immediately. They must end the decade-long assault on his individual rights and, by extension, on freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and, ultimately, democracy itself. Our demand remains the same as ever: Free. Julian. Assange.
